A literary stylist with a flair for speculative fiction, Ian R. MacLeod has been a three-time Hugo finalist, a two-time World Fantasy Award winner, a two-time Sidewise Award winner, a Nebula finalist, a Campbell finalist, a Spectrum Award finalist, and the recipient of the Locus Poll Award for Best First Novel (The Great Wheel) and two Asimov's Readers Poll Awards.

The Summer Isles (novel) was awarded the Sidewise Award for Alternate History in the long form category, and was named second-runner up for the John W. Campbell Memorial Award for best science fiction novel. It was also short-listed for the Spectrum Award (best GLBT novel).
