We support literacy, and in the United States, we support literacy in more language and culture than one. The US, we feel, is woefully self-centered in that it often sees no need to learn others' languages and cultures, while much of the rest of the world puts us to shame by speaking more than one language. Another language can be a beautiful thing—think of the beauty and sheer difference of the Chinese ideograph. Language itself can reveal aspects of cultures, and what are science fiction writers if not architects of cultures? Aio is an institutional member of the Speculative Literature Foundation and Tiffany Jonas serves annually as one of its travel grant judges.

We admire open minds. Too many of the world's problems have stemmed from the mindset that difference is bad. It doesn't have to be. Different is different. We are all humanity. We're each related to the very worst, and the very best, this species has to offer. Science fiction has a wonderful tradition of opening minds, and we're proud to be associated with that legacy.

Of course we support the exploration of space. Having the whole of humanity on one planet just doesn't offer the best odds... In the meantime,we're for valuing the environment and protecting what we've got! We actively recycle, use only environmentally friendly materials in our books, and are a member of the Green Press Initiative, as is our book printer.

And finally, we respect life. All life, not just life like us. Strange as it may seem for a company focused on humanity, we acknowledge there is other life on this planet that is just as valid as we are and in many cases much less able to help itself. We thus support all animal rescue groups, and encourage you to check out organizations such as The Fund for Animals, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and the Humane Society of the United States. An easy and absolutely free way to support various causes, from animal rescue to hunger to literacy, can be found here.
